Look, I Get It
Artificial intelligence is basically everywhere now. Can’t go a day without someone mentioning it. Last Tuesday, I was at this little café near my place, and even the barista was talking about how they used AI to optimize their espresso shots. I mean, come on.
I’ve been in tech for over 20 years. Started back in ’99, fresh out of college, working for this tiny startup in Austin. We were making web browsers when everyone else was still using dial-up. I’ve seen trends come and go. Remember virtual reality? Yeah, me too. Twice.
But This Time It’s Different
And I’m not saying that because I’m some kind of AI evangelist. Frankly, I’m kinda tired of it. But the thing is, this time, it’s actually different. It’s not just some fad. It’s not going away. It’s here, and it’s changing everything.
About three months ago, I was at this conference in Austin—yeah, Austin again—anyway, this guy named Marcus, let’s call him Marcus, he’s a data scientist over at some big tech company, he told me something that stuck with me. He said, “You know, we’re not just talking about AI anymore. It’s not some futuristic concept. It’s here, it’s now, and it’s in everything.”
Which… yeah. Fair enough.
But Here’s the Thing
I’m not gonna sit here and tell you that AI is gonna solve all our problems. Because it’s not. It’s gonna create a whole new set of problems. And honestly, alot of the stuff people are doing with it right now is just plain stupid.
Take chatbots, for example. Everyone’s so excited about these chatbots. “Oh, we can automate customer service!” “Oh, we can make AI assistants!” Yeah, yeah, we get it. But half the time, these chatbots are just annoying. You ever tried to have a conversation with one of those things? It’s like talking to a wall. A wall that’s really bad at math.
And don’t even get me started on the whole “AI art” thing. I saw this exhibit last month—some gallery downtown, can’t remember the name—and it was just a bunch of pictures generated by some algorithm. And people were actually buying them. I mean, come on. It’s not art. It’s not even close. It’s just… yeah.
But There’s Hope
Look, I’m not saying AI is all bad. Far from it. There are some really amazing things happening. Like, have you seen what they’re doing with AI in healthcare? It’s incredible. They’re using it to detect diseases, to develop new drugs, to basically save lives. That’s the kind of stuff that gets me excited.
And it’s not just healthcare. There are so many other areas where AI is making a real difference. Like cybersecurity. I was talking to this colleague named Dave—he’s a cybersecurity expert—and he was telling me about how they’re using AI to detect threats, to prevent attacks, to basically keep us all safe. And that’s awesome. That’s the kind of stuff we should be focusing on.
But here’s the thing: we gotta be smart about it. We can’t just jump on the bandwagon and start throwing AI at every problem we have. Because that’s not gonna work. We need to be strategic. We need to be thoughtful. We need to be… I don’t know, responsible.
And Speaking of Being Responsible
Let me tell you about this time I tried to use AI to write an article. Yeah, I know, ironic, right? But I was just curious. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. So I used this AI writing tool—can’t remember the name—and it was a disaster. The thing wrote this whole article about the benefits of AI, and it was just… it was completley nonsensical. It was like reading a dictionary that someone had thrown in the air and then tried to put back together.
But here’s the funny thing: it got me thinking. If AI can’t even write a decent article, then what are we doing using it for all these other things? I mean, it’s not like AI is some magical solution to all our problems. It’s just a tool. And like any tool, it’s only as good as the person using it.
So What’s the Point?
I don’t know. I guess the point is, we need to be careful. We need to be smart. We need to be responsible. Because AI is here, and it’s not going away. And if we’re not careful, we’re gonna end up in a world where chatbots are running the show and AI-generated art is hanging in museums.
And honestly, that’s a world I don’t wanna live in.
But hey, maybe that’s just me. Maybe I’m just some old-school tech editor who’s stuck in his ways. Maybe I’m just not seeing the big picture. I don’t know. You tell me.
Anyway, if you’re looking for more on this stuff, check out Tokat etkinlikler hafta sonu. They’ve got some cool events and stuff. Might be worth checking out.
But yeah, that’s all I’ve got. I’m gonna go drink my coffee now. Maybe I’ll ask the barista what he thinks about AI. I’m sure he’ll have some interesting insights.
